Year 10 - Natural Forms Project, 2017
Fine Art and Textiles

Week commencing 06/09/2017.

The project will be completed during both class and at home time for the duration of 16 weeks.  The project is worth a total of 96 marks (72 marks for sketchbook/preparation work and 24 marks for final piece.)  It is essential that all of the four assessment objectives are covered successfully in order to achieve a higher grade pass/ level 5, (see assessment objective mark sheet for marking criteria.)

AO1 – Working in artist/textile designers styles with written research to support.
A02 – Planning for a final piece in the style of your chosen artist/ textile designer, and use of different materials, techniques and processes.
A03 – Observational drawing, (this can be more linear for textile students). Drawings should be from own photographs. (No internet pictures.)
AO4 – Final piece/s which shows a clear link to an artist/s/textile designer’s style.

Please ensure that you meet the strict deadlines - it’s important that you spend an even amount of time on each of the assessment objectives to ensure that you have covered them all successfully.

Week One commencing 6/9/2017
Lesson one.

Lesson One – Brainstorm possible ideas for your ‘Natural Forms’ project. Close up compositions are best, especially for textiles.  Think about which natural forms will give you good textures/colours to make interesting photos.

Homework at the end of lesson one -  take six photos of thing related to your theme. E.g. if your chosen project is based on ‘trees’ you need six good quality photos of trees.  Remember to make your subject matter resource able for pictures, i.e., don’t draw Mount Everest if you can’t photograph it. The photos need to be brought to your next art/textile lesson, already printed. (DON’T BRING THEM ON MEMORY STICK AND EXPECT TO PRINT THEM OFF DURING LESSON, YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED BEFORE THE LESSON WITH IMAGES READY TO DRAW FROM.)

Lesson 2,
Weeks 1- 3
 Week commencing 6/9/2017 – 2/10/2017
Objective- Build upon evidence to support A03 of the assessment criteria (observational drawing.)
You must complete a minimum of:

6 x Observational drawings of things related to your ‘Natural Form’ project. (3 x grey pencil studies and 3 x coloured studies using a media of your choice.) Textile student’s drawings can be more linear but should still include a lot of detail. These will be completed in both class time and at home for the duration of three weeks.

Weeks 4-7
2nd Oct -30th Oct 2017
Objective- Build upon evidence to support A01 of the assessment criteria (artist/textile design research).
You must complete at least: 6 x research pages (working in the style of a chosen artist/ textile designer with written analysis to support each one.) These will be completed in both class time and at home for the duration of four weeks.

Discuss with your teacher artists/ textile designers who are relevant to your idea.  A mixture of contemporary and traditional art would be best.

Weeks 8 – 11
30th Oct – 27th Nov 2017

Objective – Build upon evidence to support A02 of the assessment criteria (planning ideas and experimenting with materials.)

You must have at least:

6 x finished plans in colour. (Plans should be an idea that you are considering for a final piece and should therefore show clear links to your chosen artist/ designers’ style.) Plans should also include personal photography.
You may experiment with different materials, techniques and processes.  The purpose of having six plans/design ideas is to re- visit an idea using different compositions, colours and materials. (These will be completed in both class time and at home for the duration of four weeks.)

Week 12 -13
2thd  Nov – 18th Dec 2017

Objective - Build upon evidence to support A04 of the assessment criteria. (Final outcome).

Draw the outline for your ‘Natural Forms’ final piece using your preferred choice of material/s. Textile students should prepare/ dye fabric etc. in preparation for their final piece.

Exam Week
Exam will take place during the second week back after the Christmas Holidays. (Approx. 8th Jan 2018. TBC)

Students must ensure that they are completing at least 2 hours of homework per week, as all tasks must be completed by the deadlines.  Please remember that the department is open on Wed, Thurs and Fri from 3.00pm – 4.00pm in order to complete tasks and get extra support from teachers if required.
